It’s Final Exam Time: What’s a College Parent to Do?

Testing time is stressful for students of all ages. But if your student is in their first year of college, end-of-semester finals can be a big adjustment.

There are actually several ways you might help during this final exam time.

First of all, recognize that not all students are intimidated by final exams. Many students thrive on the challenge. They’ve studied hard all semester, and will take this testing in stride. If this is your student, congratulate them, relax and enjoy their confidence.

However, a good number of students do find this time stressful. This is true of both outstanding students and those who may have been struggling.

When you talk to your student, offer them plenty of encouragement. Let them know that you understand and you are proud of them for doing what they’re doing. Remind your student that even though it’s challenging, they will get through this time.

Perhaps send them an actual snail mail letter, or an e-card. A care package will brighten their day and can help them de-stress.

Share a few tips with your student about getting through finals. Remind them:

  • To get rest, (They probably won’t, but it’s good to remind them). Sleep has a great impact on academic success. Even getting a couple hours of sleep is better than no sleep at all.
  • To organize their time and stay focused. It is helpful and makes the day less stressful if students plan ahead.
  • To get help studying. Support is available on campus for academics and for counseling from the Student Success Center (SSC) and the Wellness Center.

Sometimes health falls by the wayside when stress increases, so remember our Fitness Center opens at 7 a.m. and has normal operating hours during exam week.

Although you want to help, be careful not to overwhelm your student with too many suggestions. Give a few ideas, then step back. Your student may or may not listen to you. They will need to get through this in their own way.

Before you make any necessary arrangements for travel home, make sure you check your student’s exam schedule. Detroit Mercy final exam week is Dec. 13-17.

It is difficult, and sometimes not possible, to make special arrangements to take an exam at an alternate time. Don’t add extra stress on your family to try to work an exam schedule around travel arrangements if it can be avoided.

Try not to bother your student with issues from home during this time if you can help it. Your student needs to be able to stay focused on their schoolwork right now, and not worry about anything else.

The final exam week is an intense, focused time for students. By being understanding, encouraging, and offering a bit of support from home, you’ll be helping your student succeed.
